Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro 2019 review : Is the new $1299 MacBook Pro worth it

Apple just announced an updated model of 13-inch MacBook Pro. Its a refresh from their last 2018 model but there isn’t any significant change over the last model. It now comes with 1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz. It also has Retina display with True Tone technology, Touch Bar has now been added to the base model along with Touch ID. Apple is using their 3rd generation of butterfly keyboard in the new MacBook Pro with slightly better mechanism. Speakers are still the same as it was back in 2017 model and they sound great. They’re the best laptop speakers that you can get in the market right now.

MacBook 13-inch Display

The Retina display in the MacBook is the best in class display which comes with True Tone technology. The display can go up-to 500 nits brightness and it supports P3 wide color gamut for even more vibrant greens and reds. The display is more bright, colorful and accurate than before. Any video creator will love editing videos on this machine. The True Tone technology helps the color temperature of the display automatically adjusts to match the color temperature of the light around you. MacBook display is great for watching videos in 4K whether it’s on Youtube, Netflix, or Amazon Prime.

Keyboard and Touch Bar

MacBook 13-inch keyboard

Apple introduced the butterfly keyboard back in 2015 12-inch MacBook and it introduced to a lot of problems. Apple is using their 3rd generation of butterfly keyboard with updated material in the new MacBook Pro which includes a membrane that seemed to prevent the dust and particles to get under the keys and damage them. I personally think that Apple should consider replacing the butterfly mechanism from their MacBook and should introduce much reliable mechanism to their lineups.

You now get Touch Bar on the base model which was previously available only on high end model along with Touch ID. Apple offers a control strip on the right side, which offers quick access to system features like Brightness, Volume, Siri, and more. To the left, the Touch Bar offers more functions that change from app to app.

Performance and Battery Life

We now get the 1.4GHz quad-core processors instead of dual-core and that’s a big step forward from the entry MacBook Pro had before. Turbo Boost can kick things up to 3.9GHz under heavy loads. MacBook Pro will be lot faster while performing day to day tasks than the MacBook Air considering its lower power Y-series processors. Apple placed a larger battery with a 58.2 Wh capacity, which is slightly bigger than the 54.5 Wh battery found in the previous generation model. New battery in the 2019 model manages to power the Touch Bar, Touch ID, and T2 chip while keeping the same 10-hour battery life. Day to day use with web surfing with few tabs opened in the background, docs, and few other apps would let you reach somewhere around 8-9 hour mark on a single charge but heavy usage like photos and video editing will drain the battery at a much faster rate.

Considering the the price tag of $1299, MacBook Pro is one of the best laptop in the market which you can get right now. It’s more powerful than the MacBook Air and now comes with quad-core processor which is good considering its price tag. You’re not getting high end specs, but this laptop is more than capable of doing everyday tasks as well as give you great battery life. If you want to upgrade MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD you’re looking at $1699. However if you are a college student and looking for a laptop entry level MacBook Pro is the one for you which will help you in photoshop, video editing and other stuff.
