Asus ROG Phone 2: World’s Most Powerful Gaming Phone

Asus just announced their new gaming phone ROG Phone 2 which is a successor to their last year’s Asus ROG Phone. Last year’s ROG Phone which was packed with Snapdragon 845 clocked at 2.96 GHz with 8GB RAM along with 128GB of on board storage. This year Asus is trying to take gaming to a whole new level with their new ROG Phone 2 which is by far the fastest and most powerful phone in the world. Asus ROG Phone 2 comes with latest and greatest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus with Adreno 640 GPU along with 12GB RAM and 216/512 GB of on board storage. Asus ROG Phone 2 is a beast when it comes to gaming. The Snapdragon 855 Plus is overclocked at 2.96 GHz for better gaming performance.

Asus ROG Phone 2 is for gamers and designed for gamers. The phone is 9.7 mm thick and weighs around 240 grams. There’s a lot going on at the back side of the phone. The back panel has Asus RGB logo in the middle along with color accent strips all over the back panel which shifts color. Last’s year ROG Phone also had cooling vents but they weren’t functional. But this time we have a single cooling vent which is fully functional and helps to cool down the device temperature under heavy usage. The phone also has the Air Triggers which is a bonus feature for gamers specially playing in landscape mode. Also new are the dual cameras at the back, we now have 26mm (wide) and 11mm (ultrawide) camera lens. Rear fingerprint scanner has now been replaced by In-display fingerprint scanner. Vibration motor on the device is great, you can tweak the vibration intensity by going into the settings and accordingly you can get some really good haptic feedback.

Asus Gaming Phone 2 Display

Asus ROG Phone 2 now has the world-first 120Hz AMOLED display with 1ms response time as compared to 90Hz AMOLED display in Asus ROG Phone. The phone has a massive 6.6 inches display with screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It’s still has a 1080p panel as compared to QHD Plus display on other premium phones in the market right now. But 1080p panel will help to save some battery as display’s refresh rate is 120Hz which can drain the battery quickly.

Performance and Software

Talking about the performance, Asus ROG Phone 2 is world’s fastest phone. Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset is overclocked at 2.96GHz which means 4% CPU overclock and 15% GPU overclock. Games like Asphalt 9, Fornite, and PUBG Mobile will make use of that 120Hz AMOLED display and should run with no lag at all. However, these games still aren’t optimized for 120Hz screen. Asus ROG Phone 2 comes with X mode which lets you tweak CPU and overall performance. You can directly launch the installed games within the X mode and stream directly on Youtube or Twitch.

Asus ROG Phone 2 runs on Android Pie 9.0 right out of the box on top of Zen UI 6. But Asus will give an option to choose between stock Android skin or or it’s own Zen UI 6 skin. I personally think users will go with stock Android option as it will contain less bloatware except some of the core apps including X mode which helps to increase the gaming performance.

Battery Performance

Asus ROG Phone 2 rocks a massive 6000 mAh battery which is backed up by 30W charger which can charge the device pretty quickly. 30W charger is included right inside the box. We still don’t know about how much screen on time we will get on a single charge. But knowing the fact that phone’s display is 120Hz AMOLED display and the chipset is overclocked it will be likely to drain the battery at a higher rate.

Gaming Accessories

Asus, while designing the ROG Phone 2 has also put emphasis on the gaming accessories that you can get buy for even more better gaming experience. Asus announced some gaming accessories which are compatible with ROG Phone 2 and Aero Cooler 2 is one of them. It has a small fan at the back which helps to cool down the device while heavy gaming. You can also get Kunai Gamepad which has joy con like controller which can also be used by snapping it on the sides of the phones. Twin view dock 2 is built for gamers who likes to game on dual screen. It has a display built right into it. It acts as a secondary display, so If you want you can connect your phone into the dock and can play on both the screens.
